Propelling the quality and functionality of the boombox product category forward, this Sony XPLOD CD-Cassette Recorder CFD-G700CP is in a class by itself. Whether it is a classical sonata, jazz, country, classic rock, opera, or punk fusion and everything in between, this Sony boombox will make your music come to life with deep bass performance, detailed midrange, and super clear vocals. Be prepared to revel in the high-fidelity world of Sony portable audio with this music machine at your next house party. From start to finish, this Sony boombox’s conceptual design, performance, features, value, and fitness for professional DJ application use is simply state-of-the-art. Sony’s XPLOD boombox is a fundamental expression of the company’s technical dominance of the portable audio landscape. Sony CFD-G700CP boombox features a best in class powered speaker setup with 5 speaker drivers that produce big sound, bold sound, and superb sound for almost any size room, portable audio application, or entertainment event. This unit can play very loudly, with detailed dynamic low bass reproduction that far exceeds traditional deep-toned parameters of boombox product category. Sony XPLOD boombox will play at such loud volume levels while producing audiophile grade sound output, that it is perfect for listening interests of the most demanding portable audio or boombox enthusiast. This Sony boombox, because of its full range speaker system and Power Drive Woofer backed by a discrete 20-watt (RMS) power amplifier system, can successfully compete in sound quality with much more expensive component stereo systems. Sony portable stereo utilizes two dedicated amplifiers to power both mid-range drivers and super bass producing Power Drive Woofer. The power amplifiers allocate 12 watts of power to center bass speaker and 8 watts total power output to mid-range drivers. Since this Sony boombox features the ultimate aggressive power design, I no longer have a need for that large stereo system in my home. In fact, it is a slight of this product to call it a boombox because of the unique and powerful sound that it produces. The large and beautiful red speaker system consists of two full range 4-inch speaker drivers, two 0.8-inch tweeters, and 5-inch Power Drive Woofer with three distinct levels of bass adjustment. Power Drive Woofer features Position Off, Position 1, and Position 2 bass reinforcement settings. Power Drive Woofer rests in acoustically tuned cabinet designed to achieve maximum low frequency bass response. Power Drive Woofer features LED based illumination ring that surrounds center bass speaker. Power Drive Woofer illumination ring lights up in two distinct variations of bright red when super bass woofer is engaged by pressing Woofer control on main unit or remote commander. Sony stereo is housed within massive boombox chassis that bespeaks quality, elegance, and acoustic prowess within portable audio kingdom. The stereo’s augmented weight, special lighting effects, and sleek contoured shape present an immediate awareness of its intrinsic quality, formidable feature set, and amazing sonic properties across Radio, Tape, and CD inputs. Sony CFD-G700CP boombox’s digital volume control buttons are located on far right side of top panel. This unit features Volume – and Volume + controls. Volume can be decreased or increased in 3 segments on 0-10 digital volume scale. Line segment volume scale display is depicted on multifunction LCD. Main unit’s volume controls are duplicated on remote commander. Pressing or holding a volume control button will decrease or increase volume level rapidly as needed. If you press either volume control one key press at a time, volume level will be adjusted up or down one segment at a time. The stereo also features rear AC input jack, 28 watts AC power consumption, detachable battery compartment cover, battery compartment, DC battery terminals, 120 V, 60 Hz, AC power rating for main unit, 12 V DC power rating for main unit, 3V DC power rating for remote commander, black/silver/red color scheme, red/white/black/green front panel lettering, and it comes with operating instructions. A full function 27-key remote commander is included for convenient control of unit from a short distance. The model number of remote control is RMT-CG700A. The remote control has numerous features to enhance portability and functionality of Sony XPLOD Portable Stereo. The remote can power stereo on in AC power mode only and turn it off in battery and AC power modes. There is a 0-90-minute sleep timer which can power radio off automatically at six selectable intervals of time. To activate sleep timer, first play any music source Sony stereo offers (radio, cassette, or CD). Next, press sleep button on remote commander or main unit. Each press of sleep button will cycle sleep timer via LCD to the following: “Auto-60min-30min-20min-10min-off.” If “auto” feature is selected, stereo will turn itself off after 90-minute time. Sleep timer can be cancelled by pressing power button on main unit. Sony boombox cannot be programmed like an alarm clock to power on and begin playback of music source at specified time. A Function button allows switching back and forth between FM/AM tuner, CD player, Audio In, and cassette player. CD key allows direct access to CD player. Repeat key activates CD repeat play mode. Enter and Clear buttons are used to program and delete CD tracks into or out of memory. Sony CFD-G700CP Portable Stereo’s remote commander controls the radio’s entire manual and preset tuning features. The remote has Tune – and Tune + buttons for manual station tuning. When you press and hold either one of these buttons, tuner will automatically find next available station in descending or ascending station frequency order on either FM or AM broadcast bands. Tuner will scan for next available strongest signal broadcast and stop when it receives one. You can press Tune -/+ buttons on remote one key press at a time to locate any FM or AM frequency. For FM band, tuner proceeds up or down frequency spectrum .1 MHz at a time with each press of either Tune button. On AM band, channel step tuning proceeds up or down frequency spectrum at 10 kHz spacing increments. There are Preset – and Preset + buttons for selecting preset stations stored in memory. You must navigate preset stations in descending or ascending order one station at a time. There are Band and Mode buttons for selecting tuner function directly, switching back and forth between FM and AM broadcast bands, and changing FM stereo mode to mono reception if FM radio station is received with static or noise. The remote can raise or lower volume to desired listening level. The remote can activate or shut off Power Drive Woofer bass enhancement feature by pressing Woofer button. Audio In key allows user to select audio component connected to line input jack for playback. There is a “Sound” button to cycle through 5 preset sound modes. The remote commander contains all CD playback transport functions which include play, stop, pause, forward search, reverse search, and two skip buttons. There are Folder – and Folder + buttons to search MP3 CD folders. The remote commander cannot control cassette tape transport functions. The remote commander does not offer a numeric keypad. As a result, remote control does not feature direct input preset station or CD track access. A 3.5mm stereo headphone jack for private listening sessions and 5 equalizer curve settings (ROCK, DANCE, SALSA, REGGAETON, and FLAT EQ setting to enhance reproduction of classical music) to suit your musical tastes are thrown in as well. Sony portable stereo operates on 8 D batteries, and 2 AA batteries for supplied remote control. I recommend Duracell or Energizer alkaline batteries for maximum audio performance and battery life for this mobile stereo. All batteries should be replaced when LED battery/operation indicator dims or boombox ceases to respond to user commands. AC power is available for unit. A detachable AC power cord is supplied with portable stereo. Batteries are disengaged as a power source when unit is plugged into wall outlet. All batteries should be removed from main unit and remote commander if stereo will not be used for an extended period. Sony CFD-G700CP boombox provides outstanding FM/AM tuner reception results indoors or outdoors even under challenging reception operating environments. An examination of various sources of radio interference is a complex subject. Most sources of radio interference come from within the home. Radio frequency interference may be caused by phenomenon occurring outside home, in immediate surrounding area of your home, deteriorating atmospheric weather, seasonal conditions, tall buildings that obstruct or interfere with radio waves referred to as multipath distortion, solar activities i.e., sunspot activity, and/or interference from adjacent broadcast frequencies on AM/FM bands. You may experience interference from nearby electronic equipment in your home such as computers, cell phones, TV’s, cordless telephones, microwave ovens, etc. There could be interference from electrical motors or nearby power lines outside your home. Radio broadcasts may be disturbed by an electrical storm. Competing broadcast stations adjacent to station you are trying to listen to may degrade your reception opportunities. The sun’s solar flare activities disrupt radio transmissions at various times during the day. The digital tuner on boombox provides the most accurate and drift free radio reception possible. Digital tuner locks onto station frequencies with precision while simultaneously reducing unwanted noise anomalies that often plague lesser performing portable stereos. Sony CFD-G700CP boombox does not feature auto-reverse playback or auto stop mechanism. The cassette recorder can playback prerecorded cassettes one side at a time (single direction playback). You must turn over cassette to hear next side. The cassette deck records music from FM/AM tuner, CD player and audio component connected to line input jack. For best cassette recording results, AC power should be using during recording sessions. Do not use tapes longer than 120 minutes in length. Cassette deck’s playback head, record head, erase head, capstan, and pinch rollers should be cleaned after every 10 hours of use. Sony XPLOD boombox is an excellent choice for cassette playback and recording needs. When audio CD is inserted in CD player, total number of tracks and total playing time of disc are displayed on LCD. For example, LCD will show the following: “19 78:28”. This disc has 19 tracks with a playing time of 78 minutes and 28 seconds. When you begin playback of CD, LCD will show track number being played and elapsed playing time of current track. LCD does not show remaining playing time of track or entire disc. Sony CFD-G700CP Portable Stereo offers MP3 CD playback from personal music collection. This unit can playback, shuffle, repeat, and provide program play modes of MP3 files and folders from homemade CD-R/RW disc. CD player can read and playback a maximum number of 256 MP3 files and folders on user created disc from personal music library. The boombox is heavy and therefore, not easily portable because of it. The LCD is small and should be backlit. I do wish it had even more amplifier power and HD radio tuner built in. Power Drive Woofer lighting is disabled when sleep timer is activated. Power Drive Woofer becomes inactive when headphones are connected. Power Drive Woofer can be turned off, but overall sound depth will be diminished when super bass woofer is disengaged. This Sony boombox features sturdy fold down recessed carry handle for reliable transport to another destination. Carry handle can be neatly pushed down and tucked away into main unit when no longer needed or Sony portable stereo is in stationary position. The boombox does not offer dual disc playback, DVD media playback, or microphone jack. You can play tunes from your iPod, iPhone, Zune, Sony Walkman, or any MP3 player via auxiliary line input jack. You do not need to purchase any cable to connect your iPod to Sony CFD-G700CP boombox. The 3.5mm stereo patch cable needed to make connection between stereo and your iPod is built-in to Sony XPLOD boombox. You will need Y-audio stereo patch cable to connect TV or VCR to unit. You cannot play two audio sources connected to line input jacks concurrently. Product dimensions are Width: 21-¾ inches, Height: 9-¾ inches, Depth: 14-5/8 inches, and Weight: 19 lbs. A one-year parts and labor limited manufacturer warranty is included. Sony XPLOD boombox offers exceptional tuning performance in manual and preset station tuning modes for radio listening interests or needs. The boombox remembers last radio station tuned and volume level when powered off. This Sony boombox is reasonably priced for audio quality and features that you get. Once you listen to this boombox, you will realize Sony has redefined boombox product category for foreseeable future. Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP Portable Stereo has rugged construction to it and should last for years with proper care. It is important to compare Sony CFD-G700CP Portable Stereo’s feature set to its extremely competitive sibling, Sony CFD-G505 boombox. Both Sony XPLOD boomboxes are remarkably close in features, performance, physical appearance, and total system weight. Both Sony boomboxes offer same amplifier output power at 20 watts (RMS). Sony CFD-G700CP boombox offers superior sound quality compared to Sony CFD-G505Black boombox. Sony CFD-G700CP boombox features a larger Power Drive Woofer than the other model. Sony CFD-G700CP stereo produces bass output that is on par with much more expensive component stereo systems. Sony CFD-G700CP stereo features two tweeters for better reproduction of vocals and high-pitched instruments. Sony CFD-G505 stereo does not feature tweeter drivers. There are other key differences between the two models. Sony CFD-G700CP boombox offers 2 auxiliary inputs for connection to additional optional audio components of your choice. Sony CFD-G505 Portable Stereo only features 1 line input jack for connection to MP3 player, computer, TV, etc. Sony CFD-G700CP boombox offers MP3 CD playback, but Sony CFD-G505 boombox does not. Sony CFD-G700CP boombox provides access to preset tuner stations and CD track access one station or track at a time. Conversely, Sony CFD-G505 allows direct input preset tuner stations and CD tracks with numeric keypad on remote commander. Sony CFD-G700CP boombox is compatible with DJ lighting equipment. When a compatible DJ lighting device, such as American DJ D-Light Sync Pak Stage Lights, is connected to Sony D-Light Sync Controller, lighting device will react to beats of music produced by Sony CFD-G700CP boombox. Sony CFD-G505 boombox is not compatible with DJ lighting equipment. Sony CFD-G700CP boombox offers similar sound quality to a stereo with large Hi-Fi tower speakers attached, but Sony CFD-G505 Portable Stereo is the best audio you ever heard from a boombox. Power Drive Woofer on both models can be turned off, but overall sound quality of both units will be diminished when super bass woofer is disengaged. Both Sony boomboxes feature a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack and Sony MDR series headphones should be used to obtain best possible private listening session results. Sony CFD-G700CP Portable Stereo is an outstanding portable audio accomplishment, with utmost sophisticated sound quality for discerning music listeners, and it is a boombox for the ages. Overall rating 5 stars. Good Luck. Enjoy.
